Contemporary Realism
I am a contemporary realist working in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Viriginia) area with roots going back to graduate school. I subsequently spent 25 years living in five different countries: Switzerland, Germany, France, Russia and Indonesia. In each new environment, I produced a variety of art and exhibited locally. I taught art in Paris, Moscow and Frankfurt.
I work in three distinct genres: landscape, still life and city scenes. These works all share stylistic and symbolic similarities with shared elements: the disciplined palette, defined edges, interest in texture, contrasting positive shapes and negative space as well as a ‘Vanitas’ theme (in short: here today, gone tomorrow).
I work in a variety of media: acrylic on canvas, acrylic on wood panel, oil on canva, oil on panel, colored pencil, pastel, printmaking and photography. I base my work on my own photographic sources but do not reproduce the imagery for photorealist purposes. I edit the information and add personal responses to transform realism into something more ephemeral.
